Tiptoe Through the Vineyards
South
Coast Winery Resort & Spa Offers Private Villas with a View
to De-vine
TEMECULA—Just 60 miles from San Diego, and not much further
from Los Angeles, Temecula has become one of Southern California’s
most accessible wine regions. Though it suffered devastating
losses in the late 1990s due to vine pests, winegrowers have
learned a few lessons, and are already attracting the attention
of wine enthusiasts from the area, and beyond.
One of the
most recognized stops in Temecula’s emerging wine country, South Coast Winery
Resort & Spa has found a niche, catering to wine enthusiasts and visitors
who want a vineyard experience just feet from their doorsteps. Starting out first
as a winery, and then expanding to its current 76 private villas and spa, the
resort is the brainchild of owner Jim Carter. He purchased the 400-acres
of land in the mid-1980s on the urging of his father, but for nearly a decade,
the land lay fallow. Inspired by the movie, “A Walk in the Clouds”, which featured
a family’s experience in winegrowing and seeing similarities to that landscape
and his own, Carter was inspired to plant some 38 acres of vineyards that are
now producing some of the region’s
most recognized wines.
The resort
is located in the heart of the winery loop that runs along Rancho California
Road, and around De Portola Road and offers a full restaurant, the Vineyard
Rose, serving Euro-California cuisine. The spa and pool are set to open in
early spring. The resort offers special wedding and conference packages,
as well. Villa prices range from about $189 per night, and up.
